Getting cat urine out of carpet areas.
Written by Larry C. on August 19th, 2009One way of getting cat urine out of carpet areas is by using a recipe a friend gave to me. I have since modified the recipe with the addition of oxyclean. Getting cat urine out of carpet areas can be a hard problem if you have a cat who was just de-clawed. You might also find it hard to handle if the cat has been going in the same spot over and over. This can soak an area with urine and cause the cat urine smell to never go away.
Thankfully there are some things that neutralize cat urine. The way I go about removing cat urine from carpet areas is listed here:
- If it is recently done, use paper towels to soak up as much urine from the carpet as possible. Put the paper towels down and step on them until the paper towels come up pretty much dry. If the urine had dried and all you have is cat urine odor, you can use a black light to find the spot or spots where the urine has dried.
- Wet the area with white vinegar, cat urine ammonia is neutralized with the vinegar acidity. Then again blot the area with paper towels until almost dry, if you have a small carpet cleaner this will help to suck up the excess.
- Next I like to use oxyclean on the spot and pour a mixture of diluted soapy water on the oxyclean and let that soak down into the area and sit there for a while. This helps to neutralize cat urine in the carpet area. The oxyclean is great for removing cat urine from a lot of things and it oxidizes the bacteria in the cat urine and kills the odor. Let this solution sit for a while and neutralize the cat urine. If you don’t have oxyclean on hand you can use baking soda and peroxide, which is somewhat similar to oxyclean. Peroxide is also good for removing blood stains from cloth if it is fairly fresh. The baking soda is a powerful deodorizer of cat urine and should be allowed to dry.
- Let this solution dry and then vacuum it up with a powerful vacuum. If you have a carpet cleaner on hand, use this on the area after you have vacuumed up the dried oxyclean or baking soda. allow this to dry once again and vacuum.
This should get cat urine smell out of carpets and area rugs. Never use ammonia products for removing cat urine. This is similar to cat urine ammonia smell and may promote cats to urinate in the same spot again. This will help get cat urine out of carpet areas.
The number one tip I always give people no matter what the reason the cat is urinating outside of the box is cats don’t like dirty litter trays. Keep the litter boxes themselves clean and clean the cat litter boxes daily.
