Cat Urinating Problems Could Mean Cat Sick Symptoms

Written by Larry C. on March 23rd, 2010

Cat owners should always look for the causes of inappropriate elimination first, to eliminate urinary tract disorders, cat sick symptoms, and to effectively eliminate the problem.

The important thing to remember about cleaning up cat urine is “get it while it’s fresh.” Cat urine goes through a decaying process as it “ages” in your carpet. This is caused by bacteria feeding on organic wastes, and converting it to gases, primarily the strong ammonia smell that you find so offensive. Aside from the developing odor, the longer you allow urine to remain, the better its chances of getting through the carpet and into the pad or the wood floor beneath.

For old dried urine, the bacterial breakdown process is already well under way, and you’ll need help from odor removal products. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for best results and be aware that if the urine soaked through to the wood floor underlying, you might need to remove the carpet, padding, and treat the wood directly. You’ll have to make the decision whether to try to save your existing carpet or re-carpet completely.

If you smell the scent of cat urine but can’t find any puddles or stains, get a small black light, which will illuminate the cat pee, like magic. They are available in larger pet stores, and online.
